These are real pages from the book. The table of contents is the full one: 8 parts and 54 topics.

The Problem Isn't You. It's How It Was Explained.

You're at the pool with the test kit. The pH reads 8.0, the chlorine looks fine, and the manager asks if the pool can stay open. You're not sure if that pH matters or what to fix first.

You went back to the pH chapter. It's paragraphs about hydrogen ions, ranges and exceptions, and how pH affects chlorine is buried a few pages later.

pH 7.0–7.8 per CDC: below it water corrodes, above it chlorine weakens and scale forms.

In the book, pH is one page: a scale from 7.0 to 7.8 per the CDC, with corrosion drawn below it and weak chlorine and scale drawn above it.

Same with ppm, free and combined chlorine, cyanuric acid, the LSI and turnover: each one has its own page.

You look at the reading, you know what it means and what to adjust, and you don't have to dig through the manual.

Parts per million (ppm) expresses the concentration of a substance as the ratio of its mass to the total mass of the solution, multiplied by 10^6. In dilute aqueous solutions such as treated pool water, 1 ppm is approximately equivalent to 1 mg/L, since one liter of water has a mass of approximately one kilogram. When working in US customary units, the operator must consider that one gallon of water weighs approximately 8.34 pounds, so that one pound of chemical dissolved in 1,000,000 pounds of water corresponds to a concentration of 1 ppm.

One Page, One Topic, All Clear

Think of it this way:

A practice question gives you a 75 × 30 ft pool with a 4 ft average depth and asks for the flow rate you need for a 6-hour turnover. The numbers are there, but where do you start?

You open the page and the pool is drawn with its numbers, worked in the same 4 steps: 75 × 30 × 4 = 9,000 cubic feet, × 7.5 = 67,500 gallons, ÷ 6 hours = 11,250 gallons per hour, ÷ 60 = 187.5 gallons per minute.

Skimmer and drain → pump → filter → heater → feeder → returns, drawn as one loop

Same with pH, breakpoint chlorination, the LSI, filter rate and drain covers: each one on its own page.

Pool & Spa Operator Illustrated has 8 parts and 54 topics, all drawn, and at the end you get every formula and every number on one page each, plus the most common math, chemistry and safety mistakes.

What you see drawn, you don't have to memorize.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it for me if I already maintain pools but haven't studied math in years?

Yes. Every calculation starts from a drawing of the pool and follows the same 4 steps: draw the pool, write what you know, plug in the formula, check the units. It doesn't assume you remember school math.

Where does the content come from?

Chemistry ranges are checked against the CDC Model Aquatic Health Code (2024 edition). Safety follows the Virginia Graeme Baker Act (CPSC) and ANSI/APSP/ICC-16, incidents follow CDC guidance and chemical handling follows OSHA HazCom. Where rules differ, the book reminds you to check your state or county code.

Is this official material?

No. It's an independent illustrated study guide that covers the topics of the Certified Pool & Spa Operator® course. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by PHTA.

Does it replace the certification course?

No. You still need to take the course and the exam required in your state or county. It doesn't replace your course manual either: it sits next to it. Each topic is one drawn page, every calculation is worked in the same 4 steps with real numbers, and all the formulas and all the numbers are on one page each, so you review what the manual spreads across chapters.

Are the practice questions the real exam questions?

No. They're written for this book, in exam style, with each answer explained. They are not official questions from any exam.

When and how do I get it?

The book and the 2 bonus books arrive as a PDF by email, at the address you enter at checkout.

Do I have to pay every month?

No. It's a one-time payment.

Can I have it on paper?

Yes. The PDF is printable: print the whole book or just the pages you need, like the formula page for the pump room.

How does the refund work?

You have 30 days. We refund everything if the file won't open, if the book isn't what you see on this page, if you were charged twice or if the email doesn't arrive: just email us.
